Wearing rules — practical, not superstitious
The tradition asks for cleanliness and steadiness rather than ceremony. String the bead on natural thread — silk, cotton, or wool — or in silver or gold if you prefer metal. Wear it against the skin if that suits you; wear it over clothing if it does not.
- Remove it, or tuck it away, when it would simply be at risk — heavy work, sport, anything that could crack the shell.
- Keep it away from soap, shampoo, and chemical cleaners; they dry the surface and strip the natural oil.
- Oil it occasionally with mustard or almond oil, and let it dry in shade, not sun.
- Rudraksha darkens with wear. That patina is age, not damage — a bead that never changes was probably never a seed.
Beyond that, the rules you may have read about — the days you must not wear it, the foods you must avoid — vary so widely between households and regions that presenting any one version as "the" rule would be dishonest. Follow your own family's practice where you have one.
The mantra for the 1 Mukhi
The mantra that belongs to every Rudraksha, of every count, is the Panchakshara: ॐ नमः शिवाय — oṁ namaḥ śivāya. It needs no initiation and no permission, and it is what the overwhelming majority of wearers use.
You will also find per-bead beej (seed) mantras printed in books and on websites, each assigning a particular syllable to the 1 Mukhi. We do not reproduce those lists, for a reason worth stating plainly: the versions disagree with one another, the attributions are rarely traceable to a source anyone can check, and printing a syllable we cannot stand behind would be exactly the kind of confident invention this trade is already full of. What can genuinely happen is ordinary: a nickel-sensitive wearer reacting to a metal cap rather than the bead, a tight thread irritating the skin, or a cracked bead scratching. Those are fixed with a different thread, a longer strand, or a better bead.
