Personal imports of finished religious handicraft from Nepal are routine under the long-standing India–Nepal trade framework; where any assessment applies it is the buyer’s responsibility, and we declare shipments honestly as finished seed-bead handicraft — we do not falsify values, for your protection and ours. The tariff position, sourced — not guessed

0% basic customs duty. Rudraksha seeds have their own line in the Indian Customs Tariff — HS 1404 90 70 — and goods of Nepali origin qualify for preferential treatment under the India–Nepal Treaty of Trade, attracting zero basic duty. Our parcels travel with truthful Nepali-origin declarations, which is what that preference rests on.

5% IGST applies. Rudraksha and rudraksha malas fall under puja samagri in the CBIC GST rate schedule, taxed at five percent on import. We will not tell you "no customs charges" — that sentence is how dishonest sellers begin; the honest sentence is that the schedule says 5%, and your courier bill is the final word for your parcel.

No gift exemption exists. The old ₹5,000 CIF exemption for gifts was withdrawn on 12 December 2019, so every shipment is assessed. We state that plainly because it protects you: any seller promising to slip your parcel through as an exempt "gift" is describing a scheme that stopped existing years ago.

Courier versus post — the practical difference. Private couriers such as DHL and FedEx clear customs on your behalf and collect any duty plus a handling fee before delivery: predictable timing, small convenience cost. India Post instead hands dutiable parcels to a Customs Officer — no handling fee, but the queue is yours to wait in. We use tracked courier precisely because, at these values, predictability is worth more than the fee.

Why Indian buyers insist on Nepali origin

Walk any bead lane from Haridwar to Rameswaram and you will find two kinds of rudraksha sold side by side: large, deep-lined Nepali beads and smaller, shallow-lined Javanese ones. Both are real seeds of the same tree family — the fraud is charging Nepali prices for Javanese beads, and it is the most common cheat in the Indian market. Nepali beads command more because there are fewer of them, their mukhi lines can be read with the naked eye, and single beads above 25 mm simply do not grow in Java.

Proof, papers, and the tests that lie

The folk tests fail you, stated plainly: the water test, the milk test and the copper-coin trick prove nothing, because genuine and fake beads sink, spin and behave alike — a well-made carving passes every kitchen test ever invented. The accepted standard is X-ray, for one unforgeable reason: a real bead has exactly as many internal chambers as external faces, and a carving has a solid heart. On paperwork: our own proof is photographic and radiographic, per exact piece, before payment. If you also want an independent certificate, Indian buyers commonly use third-party labs such as GII, IGL, HRG and IRL — you can send any bead, from any seller, for examination there, and the fact that the route exists independent of every seller is precisely what makes it worth knowing.

And the honest word about cheaper listings, because you will see them: 5 Mukhi beads at ₹250–₹650 exist all over the Indian market. Some are small or lower-grade Nepali stock priced honestly; by most trade estimates over 70% of global supply is Indonesian — typically under 15 mm — and a share of it is simply relabelled. What buying from the source gets you is the ability to know which you are holding: photographs and video of the exact bead before payment, X-ray on request, and a parcel that came from the sorting table in Kathmandu with no intermediary between the tree and you. The premium is not on the bead; it is on the proof.
