Fifty-four is half of one hundred and eight: two rounds of this strand complete the full count, which is why the half-mala has been made for as long as the full one — the same japa, on a strand short enough to wear at the throat and turn without letting it pool in your lap. The guru bead is the one bead you never cross. You count to it, and at it you turn the mala and come back, so the count begins and ends at the same place every time.
